Here … a veritable jewel in nature’s crown! A natural site forged by the slow action of flowing water cutting through hard limestone rock.

The best way to explore and see the canyon is to climb up to the plateau which offers views of countryside as far as the eye can see. The effort of climbing is very much rewarded by the magnificent views from up top:

-Vertiginous walls plunging into the depths,

-Steep slopes where an impenetrable forest of green oak trees has developed.

Right at the bottom, you can hear the noise of water running down along the bed, into and around smoothed rocks.

The water is often cool and deep in places, excellent for bathing.

There are easier ways to approach the river: left bank, a path leads to the spring at La Baume, an enchanting spot, steeped in history.

Observe the trees on the river banks (called riverain species): willows, alders and gigantic black and white poplars.

Canoeing is a popular and simple sport here. Canoe rental companies offer a wide range of courses, in full security (from 8 to 30 kilometres).

Many other activities are also available: pot holing and a rich variety of walks, bridle paths, cycling tracks and water trails … you can even fly over the gorges in a hot air balloon.

At the entrance to the gorges, on the left bank, the impressive vertical wall has been equipped for climbing. There is also a ‘via ferrata’ (for those who enjoy more extreme activities).

Fishing is also available (simply purchase a single day or holiday permit. For sale at the tourist office): the river is rich in Cyprinids,

Salmonidae and migrating fish are returning thanks to redevelopment downstream.
